Twenty-five years after the September 11 attacks, Columbia SIPA’s Institute of Global Politics will bring together leading policymakers, legal scholars, New York City leaders, and national security experts to examine the lasting legacy of one of the defining events of the 21st century. As the nation marks this solemn anniversary, this two-panel event will explore the post-9/11 transformation of American government, law, and society – from the legal architecture that emerged in the aftermath of the attacks and the reorganization of the executive branch and intelligence community, to Congress’s role and New York City’s response.

The first panel will consider the enduring impact of the decisions made after 9/11 and the lessons they offer for today’s global security challenges. The second panel will assess the environmental and health impacts on first responders, the rebuilding of Lower Manhattan, and the civic resilience required of institutions and communities to overcome tragedy.
