While the attack not only shattered assumptions about Jewish sovereignty, security, and politics, it has also reshaped Israel’s relationship with the United States, its ally for decades. In the months that followed, the US government offered thoughtful support and made key interventions.
In this discussion hosted by Columbia's Institute for Israel and Jewish Studies, Jack Lew, former US Ambassador to Israel and current Professor of International and Public Affairs and faculty policy director of the Institute of Global Politics, and Amos Hochstein, Senior Advisor to President Biden and his Lead Envoy to the Middle East and currently Carnegie Distinguished Fellow at SIPA's Institute for Global Politics, reflect on this transformational moment from the vantage point of the American government. Gorman, Chairman of The Walt Disney Company and Chairman Emeritus of Morgan Stanley, Senior Advisor at General Atlantic, and Columbia University Trustee, in discussion with IGP Faculty Policy Director and former US Treasury Secretary Jacob J. Lew.
Gorman will reflect on his path to the highest levels of global finance, sharing what it took to help steer Morgan Stanley through the 2008 financial crisis and the importance of strategy and culture. He and Secretary Lew will dive into the real work of executive leadership, including how to navigate succession and long-term continuity, how to balance profitability with public impact, and how to stay ahead of major disruptions like AI and shifting workplace dynamics.
