Join Linda Robinson, CFR senior fellow for women and foreign policy and best-selling author of books on hybrid warfare, for a discussion of her new book Women in Power: Fighting for Democracy in an Age of Authoritarianism. In it she examines the governing approaches that modern women leaders are using to defend democracy and build domestic resilience. Robinson offers case studies of women in power around the world—from the Balkans and Taiwan to New Zealand and Barbados— who are using diplomatic, informational, military and economic tools to strengthen their countries amid a global crisis of democracy.

This event will bring together senior leaders, eminent scholars, and analysts from geopolitics, finance, and health to grapple with a defining question: How can we secure the political leadership and multilateral cooperation needed to prevent health emergencies and pandemics — and why is it not happening?

For today’s leaders and policymakers, the global energy transition and climate change are increasingly informing decisionmaking at the highest levels around the world. On the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly this year during Climate Week NYC, the Center on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University SIPA will host a high-level program featuring conversations on a range of pressing issues, including climate security, the energy transition, and related energy and climate policy shifts and priorities of policymakers domestically and around the world. A networking cocktail reception will follow the program.

Join the IGP Ann F. Kaplan Women’s Initiative a discussion of ongoing human rights abuses against Afghan women and girls and their fight for freedom—including an excerpt from Rule Breakers, a powerful film that documents the story of the Afghan Girls’ Robotics Team, which competed against the odds—followed by a panel discussion on the way forward featuring Roya Mahboob, the team’s founder and coach.

By November, a meaningful share of the content US voters see, share, and argue about online may not be human-created. AI-generated content — including slop — isn’t just proliferating; the business models and incentives driving its production and consumption are reshaping the internet and the broader information ecosystem. Meanwhile, chatbots are quickly becoming go-to sources for political and election information, changing how people search for, encounter, and evaluate information faster than campaigns and institutions can adapt. As the 2026 US midterms approach, we want to ask: What happens when this rapidly changing information environment collides with elections and political engagement?

This lively public roundtable will bring together some of the sharpest researchers and internet watchers to explore the new political information environment: What’s the problem with AI slop — and the underlying incentives that make it so ubiquitous? What happens when memes, propaganda, engagement bait, political persuasion, and nonsense become increasingly difficult to tell apart? And what does all of this mean for voters trying to figure out what — and whom — to trust, and where to go for information? Rather than wait for the post-election autopsy, we’ll ask what we should be watching now, what we may be missing, and what this new information ecosystem means for November and beyond.
