
Matthew Oey

Biography
Matthew Oey is a senior history major at the School of General Studies. He is from Singapore and Rutland, Vermont. After high school, he served two years in the Singapore Armed Forces as a third sergeant in reconnaissance and intelligence. Matthew’s fields of research are at the intersections of intellectual history, the history and philosophy of science, and war and peace studies. He also has a longstanding interest in Southeast Asian and Singapore history and historiography; he recently organized an academic conference at the Asian Civilisations Museum in Singapore on the theme of Eurocentrism and postcolonialism in Southeast Asian historiography. He was accepted early to Harvard Law School’s Class of 2029 through the extremely selective Junior Deferral Program. After law school, Matthew hopes to pursue a career as a legal academic in the fields of international law and the laws of armed conflict.
