
Akeyla Stewart

Biography
Akeyla Stewart is a junior at Columbia College studying political science and women’s and gender studies. Hailing from Columbus, Ohio, she is an ambitious leader passionate about education politics, children’s rights, and the intersection of racial justice and gender equality.
Akeyla’s previous experiences include research with the US Agency for International Development, where she developed strategies for aiding intergenerational trauma in school-aged children in sub-Saharan Africa. She also interned for the Columbus City Council for three years; among the highlights of her experience was a policy presentation on the impact of community-based college advising availability.
Over the past year, Akeyla and a small group of peers have launched a student organization-sponsored program that places teens from under-resourced high schools with internships at non-profit/political organizations. She is currently head director of the program and hopes to empower marginalized youth in their social justice endeavors.
After completing her undergraduate degree, Akeyla plans to attend law school.
