IGP Hosts Inaugural 2024 Election Series Event on US Foreign Policy
On September 11, the Institute of Global Politics (IGP) at Columbia SIPA convened a number of experts to discuss how the upcoming US presidential election will shape American foreign policy and global affairs. The event was the inaugural program of the Institute’s 2024 Election Series.
An Across the Aisle panel, moderated by IGP Faculty Scholar and CNN presidential historian Timothy Naftali, featured Eurasia Group president Ian Bremmer, former Under Secretary of State for Political Affairs Victoria Nuland, and American Enterprise Institute Director of Foreign and Defense Policy Studies Kori Schake. Panelists discussed the major foreign policy challenges facing the next president, such as strategic competition with China, ongoing support for Ukraine, the Israel-Hamas war, and Iran’s influence in regional conflicts.
Afterward, former Secretary of State and IGP Faculty Advisory Board Chair Hillary Rodham Clinton sat down with former Deputy Secretary of State and IGP Carnegie Distinguished Fellow Wendy Sherman for a Spotlight Interview. Sherman spoke about key lessons from her decades of diplomatic experience working with North Korea and Iran and the lessons she learned that can be applied to resolving the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and war in Ukraine.
